Please join us for this fascinating talk with Berin Golonu, Professor of Art History and Visual Studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The new public gardens that opened in Istanbul and Cairo around the year 1870 were designed after the promenades built during Baron Haussmann's renewal of Paris in the 1850s. This presentation undertakes a triangulated comparison between the promenades, parks and public gardens of Paris, Istanbul and Cairo to discuss how the aesthetics of the picturesque landscape became a signifier of modernizing reform, infrastructural and commercial growth, and increasing urbanization in the late nineteenth century. This talk will be followed by a brief Q&A period and light refreshments.
