FORBES, Kenneth
Canadian (1892-1980)
PORTRAIT OF SAMUEL EDWARD WEIR, Q.C.
1966
oil on canvas
Kenneth Forbes, best known for his portraits, was himself the son of a celebrated Canadian portrait painter, John Colin Forbes, who painted such Canadian luminaries as Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
In late 1950, Sam had approached F.H. Varley to make a sketch of him.
Sam sat for Varley and in February, 1951 Varley wrote to Sam that the
sketch was completed. In his letter he described the portrait, stating "I believe the more you
see of it — the more like you it will become."
