The French founded Louisbourg on the eastern point of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia in 1713. Strategically important because its proximity to cod fisheries, it was taken by the British in 1745, returned to the French and retaken by the British in 1758 under commander, Sir Jeffrey Amherst.
