Cornelius Krieghoff German-trained Krieghoff adopted the detailed descriptive style popular in Germany during the middle of the nineteenth century. His subjects were drawn from the life he saw around him in Quebec. Our painting illustrates a native meeting on the banks of a forested lakeshore. A gesticulating figure is encircled as he relates a story or event. The centre figure wears a red crane emblazened on his clothes, of possible spiritual significance as a protector of the bearer of that totem. Mr. Weir acquired three other oils by Krieghoff. |
