Hippolyte Sebron From earliest times, Niagara Falls has been a mecca for travelers. As early as the 17th century, artists were coming to capture its special character. Our painting shows wind-blown spectators on a sunny, clear day looking at a particularly vigorous flow of water over the Falls. The painting is also one of the earliest known portrayals of the “Maid of the Mist”. Throughout his life, Mr. Weir acquired 160 artworks that document the geography and history of our region, from the first known engravings of the late 17th century, through a chronological progression of prints, watercolours and oils to approximately 1947. |
